Dream Girl, the recent Bollywood
movie, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Nushrat Barucha along with others, is
more than just a laugh riot with punches after punches in every scene. It’s a
reflection of the kind of comedy movies we all have been waiting for in
Bollywood. It has some bits of the romance between hero and his female
counterpart but it can’t be called as typical ‘romantic’ Hindi movie that we
watch on our DTH HD channels.
We have watched many comedy movies
on our DTH HD channels so what makes
Dream Girl any different? Here’s why?
Ramleela with Men as Women
The comedy movie sure is relatable
as hell as we all have watched Ramleela in our childhood where males ended up
playing roles female characters. The movie shows Ayshmann dressed up as ‘Sita’
and left audiences in splits with his lady-like body language and voice.
Though there have been many movies
we watched on our DTH HD channels
where men dressed up as women and entertained audience but you got to admit, no
one does it like Ayushmann.
Talent Outside Parents’ Comfort Zone
In the opening parts of the movie,
Ayushmann is seen criticized by his father Annu Kapoor for playing a woman’s
character in Ramleela and urges him to do something respectable instead. No
matter, how talented the child is, an unconventional talent is always
disapproved by the parents and instead, Ayushmann gets a job at an adult
helpline centre where he makes a living out of talking in sultry voice with his
suitors. This movie is a bitter reflection of the societal norms on how a
child’s unconventional talent is still unacceptable in the society.
Small Town Men’s Obsession with Adult Hotlines in India
The movie categorically pointed
out the small town men’s obsession with calling adult hotlines in India. The
closing scene where Ayushmann speaks about isolation and need of a companion in
the desperate need of not having a partner highlights the problem of
loneliness. The obsession is due to the lack of a partner, sexual obsession, or
merely the stigma attached to calling such numbers.
