There was something awesome about
the 90’s era when the comedy shows on television have barely started and picked
up immediately by audiences for the sheer newness of the concept. These comedy
shows used to air just once or twice a week but never ceased to piqued the
audience’s curiosity with their dose of desi laughter.
In the modern times, when we have
every control at the tap of a button and the entire channel list and price before us at all times; the gloriousness of
those timeless comedy shows is missing.
Here’s our list of classic Indian
comedy shows from 90’s that made our childhood super awesome:
1.
Dekh
Bhai Dekh
The Diwan family of
Dekh Bhai Dekh was more like our family back those days when comedy was a genre
with only a handful of shows. The dynamics of joint Indian family, their
relationship dynamics, and smallest of antics were displayed in the most
humorous way possible.
Probably the biggest
ensemble cast over in an Indian television show, each character from Sushma
Seth to Deven Bhojani and Shekhar Suman was immensely hilarious in their own
charming way.
2.
Zabaan
Sambhal Ke
Indian adaptation of
American sitcom Mind Your Language, Zabaan Sambhalke was a laughter riot based
on the chaos happening inside a Hindi language class for adults. Pankaj Kapoor,
played the role of engineer-turned-language teacher, used to be aghast with the
kind of odd questions his students would surprise him with. The show
beautifully went beyond the geographical limits as the students came from
diverse cultural background.
3.
Tu
Tu Main Main
There couldn’t have
been a more appropriate and hilarious take on saas-bahu relationships than this
one. Reema Lagoo and Supriya Pilgaonkar’s funny everyday banter used to leave
us in splits and brighten our day. The unconventional mother and daughter in
law duo always had one mischief or the other up their sleeve and made our
childhood awesome with their crazy comedy antics.
4.
Hum
Paanch
One of the most
hilarious and distinctly-creative shows in 90’s, Hum Paanch was a middle-class
family drama with a clueless father, Ashok Saraf, and his five supremely
mischievous and trouble-inviting daughters. With all family members taking digs
at each other to the dead wife talking through the picture; was there anything
not to love about this show?
5.
Shrimaan
Shrimati
Reema Lagoo, before turning into
the universal mother, used to be a laughter riot back then. The crackling
comedy show crazily explored the concept of ‘Love Thy Neighbor’s Wife’ and had
some rib-tickling performances by Archana Puran Singh, Jatin Kanakia, and
Rakesh Bedi in the lead roles.
